The May Day Awards, organized by the National Trade Union Congress, are bestowed on persons and companies that have made significant contributions to the trade union movement in Singapore.
For the 2009 edition of the May Day Awards, SOXAL was nominated by the Chemical Industries Employees Union (CIEU) for its first Plaque of Commendation, in recognition of its outstanding contributions towards promoting good industrial relations and workers' training.

The night was a double celebration for SOXAL as Mr. Md Zin Abdol Azis, Branch Secretary of the SOXAL Branch, was also awarded the Comrade of Labour Award, in recognition of his contributions to CIEU and his fellow workers.
