“Think Safety, Drive Safely”, the Heavy Vehicle Road Safety Campaign for 2009, is a continuation of the success that has been borne through the collaborative efforts of SOXAL and the Traffic Police in 2008, which aims to promote heavy vehicle road safety.
This campaign targets to drive home five key messages:
a) Stay alert
b) Observe traffic rules
c) Don’t speed
d) Don’t phone and drive
e) Fasten your seatbelt
To champion this campaign, banners exhorting drivers to follow these guidelines will line roads with frequent heavy vehicle traffic, such as Pioneer Road, Telok Blangah Road, Jalan Buroh, as well as on the AYE.
Two 30-tonne liquid gas tankers, SOXAL’s largest additions to their fleet of heavy vehicles, will also carry the campaign messages on their bodies as they ply the roads.
Heavy Vehicle Road Safety in Singapore – Every Heavy Vehicle Road User’s Responsibility
The Traffic Police’s approach towards heavy vehicle road safety has been successful. In the first nine months of 2009, the total number of fatal accidents stood at 124 compared to 161 in the same period of 2008. The number of persons killed in accidents in the first nine months of this year had dropped to 133 compared to 169 in the same period of 2008. Each fatality constitutes a needless loss of life, which can be avoided if companies take a strong stand in supporting heavy vehicle road safety. This is where strategic collaborations between the Traffic Police and private MNCs such as SOXAL can help to promote and convey key messages.
SOXAL – Championing Heavy Vehicle Road Safety in Singapore
With a fleet of 100 heavy vehicles and more than 50 drivers plying the road around the clock, SOXAL has a strong incentive to promote heavy vehicle road safety, which ultimately not only leads to safer roads but also more efficient deliveries.
In addition to its partnership with the Traffic Police, SOXAL has launched a series of in-house competitions, supported by the Traffic Police , to select the safest driver. Judged on criteria such as an accident-free record, practical and theoretical tests, the involvement of the Traffic Police in the selection process has reinforced the message of Heavy Vehicle Road Safety to our drivers.
This series of in-house safety campaigns that began last year has seen heavy vehicle incidents in SOXAL drop from 10.7 road incidents per million km travelled in 2008 to 5.8 road incidents per million km travelled in 2009, a significant drop of more than 45%.
Mr Woo Siew Wah, SOXAL’s Managing Director said,
“SOXAL places a high priority on the safety and well-being of our employees, customers and vendors. As a socially responsible company, we need to take a proactive role in reminding heavy vehicle drivers of the five basic guidelines. This platform with the Traffic Police is an excellent means to do so.”
DAC Christopher Ng, Commander, Traffic Police Department said
“I am glad that SOXAL is again partnering the Traffic Police to promote heavy vehicle road safety this year. Enforcement will continue but at Traffic Police, we believe that education is equally, if not more, important to change drivers' behaviour on the roads.”
